Customer churn is one of the most expensive problems businesses quietly deal with. Acquiring a new customer often costs far more than retaining an existing one, yet many companies only react after customers leave.
In this blog, I’ll walk through how I built a Customer Churn Prediction model using Machine Learning on the Telco Customer Churn dataset. The focus here is not just on building a model, but on thinking like a data professional—connecting business goals to technical decisions.
1. Problem Statement
Business Question:
Can we predict whether a customer is likely to stop using the service?
Why this matters:
If a business can identify high-risk customers early, it can take preventive actions such as personalized offers, improved support, or better pricing strategies.
Machine Learning Framing:
- Problem Type: Binary Classification
- Target Variable: Churn (Yes / No)
- Output: Probability of customer churn
2. Dataset Overview
The Telco Customer Churn dataset contains customer demographics, account information, and service usage details, including:
- Customer tenure
- Contract type
- Monthly and total charges
- Payment methods
- Internet and phone services
- Churn status
Each row represents a single customer, and the goal is to learn patterns that indicate churn behavior.
3. Data Exploration and Understanding
Before cleaning or modeling, I performed an initial exploration to answer key questions:
- How many customers are in the dataset?
- Are there missing or inconsistent values?
- Is the churn data balanced or skewed?
- Which features are numerical vs categorical?
One important observation was that churned customers formed a significant but smaller portion of the dataset, which makes evaluation metrics beyond simple accuracy essential later on.
4. Data Cleaning and Preprocessing
Removing Irrelevant Features
The customerID column was removed since it uniquely identifies customers but provides no predictive value for churn.
Handling Data Type Issues
The TotalCharges column appeared numeric but was stored as text.
This required conversion to a numeric format, with invalid entries handled as missing values.
Missing values were then filled using the median, which is robust to outliers.
Encoding the Target Variable
Since machine learning models do not understand text labels, the target column was encoded as:
- Yes → 1
- No → 0
5. Feature Engineering
The dataset contained many categorical features such as contract type and payment method.
To make them usable for machine learning: - One-Hot Encoding was applied - The first category was dropped to avoid multicollinearity
This step transformed the dataset into a fully numerical format suitable for modeling.
6. Train–Test Split
To ensure fair evaluation, the dataset was split into: - 80% training data - 20% testing data
Stratified sampling was used to maintain the same churn ratio in both sets. This avoids biased performance results.
7. Model Building
As a baseline, Logistic Regression was chosen due to: - Interpretability - Strong performance on binary classification - Ability to explain feature impact
This model provides not just predictions, but also insights into why customers churn.
8. Model Evaluation
Instead of relying only on accuracy, multiple metrics were used: - Confusion Matrix - Precision and Recall - ROC–AUC Score
These metrics are crucial because in churn prediction: - False negatives (missing a churned customer) are often more costly than false positives.
9. Key Insights
Some strong churn indicators observed were: - Short customer tenure - Month-to-month contracts - Higher monthly charges - Certain payment methods
These insights can directly inform business strategy, not just model performance.
10. Conclusion
This project demonstrates how machine learning can move beyond theory and provide real business value. Churn prediction is not about achieving the highest accuracy—it’s about making actionable predictions that help retain customers.
With further improvements such as advanced models, feature selection, and deployment using a web framework, this system can easily be production-ready.

Machine learning becomes powerful when it’s aligned with business goals.
This project reinforced the importance of:
